Task 1 - Audience Response and Behaviour

Call of Duty: (3 Minute Vlog)


Audience theory;

Audience theory are 3 different types of theory which are the hypodermic model, the uses and gratification model and last but not least, the reception theory. Some people could say Call of Duty uses the gratification model because people play it for a certain reason and not necessarily for the actual violence. The reasons they might play call of duty vary such as playing this game for releasing stress, gaining some sort of pleasure from it, to kill time, to keep a high level status etc, there are many reasons why people may play call of duty.

Also, some people could also say Call of duty uses the hypodermic needle model. The Hypodermic Needle model suggests that people will act based on what they have been told or shown. So, if people are exposed to violence, they will be violent.  Furthermore they could say they’re injecting lots of influence to the persons head, leading them to actually be actual violent in real life. The fact they promote all this violence in adverts and on TV could lead people into buying the game and then lead to be actual violent in real life.

Passive or active consumption

Active consumption is when the audience will engage and discuss media messages that comes across to them and sometimes question media messages through life experiences. Passive consumption is when the audience doesn’t engage or question the media message but just accepts the message. So some people may not want to question the violence in the call of duty game but just accept it. I believe there or many passive consumption users, many people play shooting games such as call of duty but do not necessarily agree with the violence.

Responses

Negotiated - Negotiated responses is where the audience put their opinions and values towards the film or anything else. The audience will have a negotiation with themselves to allow them to accept the way in which the product or text is presented. Sometimes you may agree with some parts of the game and disagree with others.

Participatory - Participatory is a response is when the audience interacts and participates with the media they are looking at. An example of this is people are encouraged to comment from home and online on TV programs, News stories, Films and more. Social media had encouraged people to get more involved with media, such as using twitter and Facebook to comment on things such as blogs and comment sections.  

Oppositional- An oppositional response is when a person isn’t in the target audience will completely disagree with the product or message.  So for example a 30 year old may disagree with the game Call of Duty because they are not the target audience, therefor it wouldn’t appeal to them and interest them in anyway.

Preferred - Preferred means the specific meaning to an image is used widely in advertising. Some would say call of duty is widely advertised which is a bad decision. It is all over the TV always being advertised and always being shown on YouTube on adverts before the video starts.


Effect debate

Effects Debates - There are lots of debates about what effect media consumption has on its audience. Some people argue that excessive consumption of certain types of media, violent films and video games for example, lead to people becoming more violent. The Culmination Theory suggests that while exposure to a single violent film or game is unlikely to cause someone to become violent overnight but, long term, repeated exposure to violence is likely to desensitise people to violence, both in media and in real life. In other words just from playing call of duty for a short term time will not make them violent, whereas if that individual were to play it over a long term time it could potentially make them violent and put them in the wrong time.

Effects of Exposure to explicit sexual or violent content - Call of duty doesn’t have any sexual content in it whatsoever so therefor it wouldn’t have an impact on the audience other than the violent content impact. There are a lot of gory and bloody scenes in this game, especially the campaign missions. This could be really shocking and impact the younger audiences. Often, when young children see something on the TV they often believe it is true or alright to do, so if they are playing a shooting game where they kill and shoot lots of people, they could end up believing that is ok to do and put them in the wrong path. That is why most call of duty’s have a minimum age of 16.


Effects of advertising - Advertising is perhaps the type of media most targeted at getting the preferred reading from the people that view it. Adverts can have such an impact on their audience, there are lots of rules about what can and can’t be shown and said on an advert. There were quite a lot of issues some people may have experienced when watching these gory adverts, one of them being they do not want their child/children playing these violent games. The fact that they are actually promoting a shooting game which involves killing of other people is giving out the wrong message. Some might say that they are actually promoting that shooting and killing is alright to do. Whereas others are alright with it and accept the fact that it just a game and nothing further than that.

Health Concerns – in Call of duty, there were not so many health concerns, other than the fact it involves shooting and killing which could then influence young children that it is alright to shoot and kill.

Task 1


Task 1: Media Products & their Audiences – Websites


The content for this website is a children’s entertainment website, the colour consists of many different colours such as black, white, green, red, purple, orange, turquoise and blue. The fonts are very basic and simple, the heading and the tab fonts are all the same which Calibri, and size 10/11pts. The heading is a bigger font size than everything which is obvious because it is the heading and needs to be the biggest so that it is eye catching and appealing.

The construction content of the website is very laid out well, the layout is quite simple and easy to navigate and map around. It got the heading tabs starting with sign in, following the other news website links such as Newsround, CBBC player, CBBC on TV. Then it has the search bar on the top right hand corner.

Below all of these it has to main 7 categories starting with Shows, Games, Quizzes, Watch, Join in, Topics and Newsround. Furthermore it has a big central image with a headline, then below this there are multiple other images with other sub headlines

This CBBC websites has many codes and conventions such as linguistic, visual, symbolic, genre and target audience.

Linguistic means the way the language is written for its purpose/audience. Furthermore, the mode of address which is the way the media talks to its audience. The four types of modes are 1st person, 3rd person, formal and informal and last but not least, colloquial. In this case the language on CBBC’s website is informal and colloquial because of their target audience, their target audience are children which means therefor they cannot talk in formal as they most probably understand it. The actual BBC news brand is formal because it is a news brand website therefor they have to be formal. If they are informal they will lose a lot of their audience as readers want reliable formal sources.  Some of the headings are written in first person, second person and third person. This makes the website’s content very reliable and professional.

Most children nowadays understand informal and colloquial language as it easier to interpret and understand. You can tell the language is informal for example there was a text saying “Do u have what it takes to beat them?”.


CBBC’s visual consists of the page’s layout, images and colours.



















This website layout is similar to any other website, it has the brands logo in the top left corner “BBC”. Then alongside the brand’s name it has drop down categories in two rows. Then beneath that they have 8 pictures with captions besides them, I believe the reason as to why this particular website has many images is because children love lots of pictures and little writing as this entertains them. They wouldn’t want to read a website with juts lots of text and minimal pictures. The images keep them entertained and engaged. The colour scheme is basic yet interactive and fun. The colour consists of green, pink, blue, orange and black.

The way in which this website is symbolized, is in a positive children’s manner. The use of content and use of colours suggest this. For example, the bright green red and pink colours are used which suggest happiness and children like these colours. Therefor the younger audience would appeal to this website more than they would to any other website. The use of colours is a good touch to the website because it is very eye appealing and connects to the younger audience at the same time.

The genre for this website is entertainment, this is because the audience would visit the website when they are bored and want to entertain themselves with entertainment such as kids cartoon programmes. As well as the website being entertainment, it could also be educational because there are a few programmes which teach things so the audience could learn from.

The target audience for this website are aged 6 – 14 years old, based anywhere in London. They are both male and female, are in full time education either in primary school or in secondary school. They do not get any income as they are to young so they get income from their parents. Hobbies would be watching cartoons, cbbc programmes and comics.
